Search Engine Definitions
SEO: Search engine optimization -techniques that enable your site to appear higher in a list of search engine results.

SEM: Search engine marketing - the practice of marketing and advertising through the search engines - includes SEO and pay-per-click (PPC) ads on Google (AdWords) and Overture.

SEP: Search engine placement - the position granted to a specific web page as it relates in importance to all similar web pages.

SERP: Search engine result page - this is the position your web page gets in a search engine, for the keywords imputed.

Organic Search: Natural and free website searches. This is the cheapest form of internet advertising and can often produce all the results a website needs.

Google AdSense: The most popular form of paid search advertising. There are many spins off of this program by other companies, but so far, none have come close to the results Google has to offer.

Page Rank: GoogleĆ¢€™s measure of the relative value of a web page as compared to all of the other pages on the internet. Page Rank goes from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest.

Unlike web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines either operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input.
There are 300 million searches carried out every single day.
85% of qualified Internet traffic is generated through search engines.
75% of searchers never look further than the first page.
In the USA, Google accounts for 64% of all searches, Yahoo is next in line with 22%, followed by MNS at 9% and Ask.com with 3% of all search requests. The remaining search engines account for 5%. Source: Hitwise, March 2007.
Search engines do not have records of a website (don't know you exist) until the website is found and/or placed into it's indexing files.
A great website with great SEO/SEM is a powerful combination.
Most web design companies do not optimize for search engines.
Most SEO companies do not design websites.
Most web designers do not offer SEO copyrighting.
SEO is not and will never be an exact science.

Keyword Placement Tips
Listed here in order of importance, are the actions to take for keyword placement, once you have determined which keywords you will be using.

The <title> tag: found in the <head> section of your source code.
The website URL: or the web address as shown inside of your browser address box.
File names: the name you give to an HTML page file, it shows in your browser bar after the .com/

NOTE: It's best to use 2-3 words seperated by hyphens - not underscores.
The meta description: found inside the <head> section; this comes up as the description beneath your page title in searches.
<h1> heading tags: This is for the page
